NEET UG Counselling 2026: Choice Filling

Choice filling is where you rank every college-course combination you're willing to accept, in the order you'd prefer them. The allotment algorithm then works down your list, offering you the highest-ranked choice your NEET rank and category qualify you for, among seats still available.

This is the single stage where preparation matters most — a poorly ordered or too-short list can mean an unnecessarily weak allotment, or no allotment at all.

How the allotment logic treats your list

Your choices are processed strictly in the order you rank them, against the merit list for that quota/category. You are allotted the highest choice on your list where a seat is available and your rank qualifies — not necessarily the closest match to your rank.

This means choices should be ordered by genuine preference, not by perceived 'difficulty' — an unrealistic first choice does no harm as long as realistic and safe choices follow it on the list.

Locking and editing your choices

Most portals let you add, remove, and reorder choices freely until the choice-filling window for that round closes, after which the list is locked and used for allotment. Some portals require an explicit 'lock choices' action; others auto-lock at the deadline — check which applies to the portal you're using.

  • List every seat you'd genuinely accept — a short list narrows your allotment chances unnecessarily
  • Order by real preference, mixing ambitious, realistic, and safe options throughout the list, not front-loaded and back-loaded separately
  • Don't wait until the last hour to lock — portal load and connectivity issues near deadlines are common
  • Revisit your list each round if choice filling reopens — your standing relative to cutoffs can shift

Frequently Asked Questions

How many choices should I add?+

There's no fixed number, but a list limited to only a handful of top-choice colleges is the most common cause of candidates missing allotment entirely. A broader list costs nothing extra and only improves your odds.

Does the order of my choices affect my rank or merit position?+

No. Your merit position is determined by your NEET rank and category, independent of how you order your choices. Ordering only determines which available seat you're offered first.
