Government Medical Colleges (NEET UG)

Government medical colleges are run by central or state governments and offer the most affordable MBBS/BDS education in India. Seats are allocated almost entirely through counselling — AIQ for 15% of seats plus central institutes, and state quota for the remaining state-government seats.

How seats are allocated

15% of seats in state government medical colleges go to the All India Quota, open to candidates nationwide via MCC counselling. The remaining 85% are state quota, generally restricted to domiciled candidates of that state and allotted through the state's own counselling process.

Central institutes (AIIMS, JIPMER, and similar) allot 100% of seats through AIQ/MCC counselling, with no state-quota component.

What to weigh when ranking government colleges

Fees are typically the lowest across all college categories, making government seats highly competitive at every rank band. Location, hostel infrastructure, and clinical exposure (attached hospital size and patient volume) vary significantly between colleges and are worth researching beyond just fee and rank cutoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a candidate from one state get a government seat in another state?+

Yes, through the All India Quota (15% of seats), which is open nationwide regardless of home state. State quota seats (the remaining 85%) are generally restricted to domiciled candidates of that state.

Are government college fees the same across states?+

No — fee structures are set independently by each state/institution and vary. Always confirm current fee structure directly with the college or your state's counselling authority.
