State Quota Seats (NEET UG)

State quota refers to seats reserved for candidates meeting a specific state's domicile criteria, allotted through that state's own counselling authority rather than MCC. Most government seats, and many private-college seats, fall under state quota.

State quota vs. All India Quota

AIQ seats are open nationally regardless of home state, and make up 15% of government medical college seats plus all seats in central institutes. State quota covers the remaining 85% of government seats plus the state-quota portion of private/deemed colleges, and is restricted to domiciled candidates.

Domicile definitions differ by state — commonly based on years of residence, having studied in the state for a minimum period, or a parent's government posting in the state. Read your specific state's domicile criteria carefully rather than assuming it matches a neighbouring state's rules.

Registering for state counselling

You register for state counselling separately from MCC, directly with your state's counselling authority, and typically need to prove domicile with specific certificates at verification (see the documents page for the general checklist).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim state quota in a state where I studied but I'm not originally from?+

Depends on that state's specific domicile rules — many states do grant eligibility based on years of schooling in the state, independent of where your family is originally from. Check your specific state's notification.

What happens if my domicile certificate is challenged during verification?+

You may be asked for additional supporting documents or, in some cases, disqualified from that quota if the claim can't be substantiated — this is why getting domicile documentation right before counselling starts matters.
